Deprived of Food and Water, Forced to Put Socks in Mouths, and Cat Litter Scattered on Beds
Forced to Run Barefoot on Gravel as Punishment… Couple Likely Facing Severe Sentences
Circumstances revealing that three young children endured shocking physical and emotional abuse over a prolonged period in a West Virginia home have sent shockwaves across American society.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Department in West Virginia announced on the 29th (local time) that Erica Lynn Sayer (45) and her husband Clifford Gale Sayer (46) were arrested and charged with felony offenses of child abuse and neglect.
According to online court records, the couple each faces a total of six felony counts, including three counts of child abuse resulting in bodily injury and three felony counts of child neglect creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury.
Jackson County Sheriff RH Mellinger described the home as a real-life "House of Horrors," stating that the children had endured unbelievable abuse for years.
According to investigative findings, the couple withheld food and water from the children, prohibited them from using the restroom, scattered cat litter over the children's beds, and forced them to run barefoot on gravel roads as punishment whenever emotional conflicts arose.
Furthermore, it was confirmed that they engaged in sadistic acts such as beating the children with household items, forcibly stuffing dirty socks into their mouths, and forcibly shaving their hair with razors.
According to psychological statements given by the children during the police investigation, the victimized children stated, "Mom beat us, and Dad (Gale) stood by and watched." In particular, it was revealed that the couple constantly tormented and insulted the children by exploiting the memories of their deceased biological parents.
Sheriff Mellinger denounced the acts, stating, "Adults who were supposed to be guardians and keep the children safe instead created a house of horrors and became the abusers. This incident is a painful reminder of just how critical it is for those around to report suspected child abuse."
Meanwhile, court records show that Erica Sayer was released on a total bond of $750,000 and her husband Clifford on a $150,000 bond, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 2.
