151,967 Students Enrolled for the 2026-2027 School Year… Falling 3,000 Below Projections
Declining Birth Rates and Decreased Immigration Identified as Primary Causes… Acceleration of Elementary and Middle School Closures and Consolidations Expected
Montgomery County Public Schools (Montgomery County Public Schools) saw its student enrollment drop sharply by more than 4,000 compared to the previous school year, marking the steepest decline in 47 years outside of the pandemic period. Consequently, district-level restructuring efforts, including school boundary adjustments and school consolidations, are expected to accelerate.
According to the latest enrollment data released by the MCPS Board of Education, the unofficial student enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year stands at a total of 151,967 students. This represents a decrease of 4,083 students compared to the 2025-2026 school year, and falls approximately 3,000 students short of the district's initial projection of about 155,000.
According to the Fiscal Year 2028 Capital Budget submitted by the school district, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic period (a drop of approximately 4,700 students), this marks the first time in 47 years since the 1978-1979 school year that enrollment has fallen by more than 4,000 students in a single school year.
MCPS cited declining local birth rates along with a reduction in international student enrollment (including multicultural and immigrant families) as the primary drivers of this steep decline. International student enrollment in the county has continued on a downward trend, dropping from 4,583 in the 2023-2024 school year to 3,676 in the 2024-2025 school year, and further down to 2,150 in the 2025-2026 school year.
A school district official explained, "The decline in student enrollment is not unique to Montgomery County, but a common phenomenon seen throughout the Washington metropolitan area (DMV), including neighboring Fairfax County."
According to new long-term projections, total enrollment across MCPS is expected to decline by an additional 12,571 students over the next six years, dropping to around 143,479 by the 2031-2032 school year.
In response to these structural changes, MCPS is currently underway with elementary and middle school closures and consolidations, as well as Boundary Study processes. The school district stated that, in order to address both classroom overcrowding and underutilization simultaneously while ensuring efficient budget execution, it will continue to communicate with local residents and take phased steps in accordance with this MCPS planning guide.
