Established on September 6, 1776… Commemorative Events and Festivals Held to Reflect on County History
Montgomery County, the most populous county in Maryland, is celebrating its 250th anniversary with a diverse array of commemorative events and a meaningful look back at its local history.
Founded on September 6, 1776, Montgomery County has grown from a quiet rural community into Maryland's largest key hub, with a population now exceeding one million.
In a statement, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized the importance of reflection, saying, "Reaching this 250-year milestone is a significant achievement, but to properly honor our history, we must also confront and discuss its darker, more difficult chapters."
Throughout the month of September, Montgomery County is hosting a variety of programs highlighting key figures, places, and historical events that shaped the county.
Meanwhile, traditional community Labor Day events were also held during the 250th-anniversary week. Kensington and Gaithersburg hosted Labor Day parades featuring local organizations, performers, and public officials.
Additionally, county officials will hold a 25th anniversary 9/11 commemoration ceremony on September 11 at Courthouse Square Park in Rockville. The ceremony will honor the noble sacrifices of the first responders and the nearly 3,000 victims who lost their lives, including 11 Montgomery County residents.
