Education platform 'Niche' releases rankings... Michigan ranks 2nd, Virginia takes an impressive 3rd
Cost-effectiveness highlighted compared to private universities... Drawing attention amid a surge in student loan delinquencies
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) claimed first place in the "2027 Best Public Colleges in America" rankings released by education research platform Niche. In the greater Washington metropolitan area, the University of Virginia (UVA) reaffirmed its status as a prestigious public institution by placing third nationwide.
According to the overall rankings released by Niche on the 5th (local time), top-ranked UCLA recorded a 93% graduation rate, receiving the highest marks across overall academic performance and campus environment. Economics, political science, and psychology were cited as popular majors, with undergraduate enrollment currently standing at 33,470. Following UCLA, the University of Michigan (2nd) and the University of Virginia (3rd) rounded out the top tier.
Major public universities in the Washington capital area also showed strong performance. In Virginia, following UVA, the College of William & Mary placed 17th and Virginia Tech ranked 19th, placing three institutions from the state in the top 20. The University of Maryland came in at 24th nationwide.
The top 25 list also included Georgia Tech (4th), the University of Texas at Austin (5th), the University of Florida (6th), the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (7th), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (8th), UC Berkeley (9th), and the University of Wisconsin–Madison (10th). They were followed by UC San Diego (11th), Florida State University (12th), the University of Georgia (13th), UC Davis (14th), Texas A&M University (15th), the University of Washington (16th), Ohio State University (18th), Penn State (20th), UC Irvine (21st), Purdue University (22nd), the University of South Florida (23rd), and New Mexico Tech (25th).
Allison Shrivastava, Senior Economist at Niche, explained, "The top-ranked schools offer outstanding academic programs and abundant research opportunities while carrying a lower tuition burden than private universities, delivering exceptional educational value." However, she advised, "Because each institution offers a completely different combination of academic culture, campus experience, and values, choosing a school that aligns with an individual student's preferences is far more important than a simple comparison of rankings."
Meanwhile, this year's ranking announcement is drawing heightened attention as it coincides with the mounting burden of student loan repayments across the United States. According to a recent analysis by the Associated Press, the number of delinquent student loan borrowers nationwide surged by more than 4.2 million over the one-year period from April 2025 to March 2026. As the number of young adults unable to repay their debt spikes amid high inflation and interest rate pressures, the preference of students and parents for prestigious public universities that offer strong value for money is expected to grow even stronger.
