Route 354 (River Road) pipe replacement in Lancaster requires road closure and detour
Starting Tuesday, March 3, all traffic will be detoured to replace three pipes with a large box culvert, which is approximately the length of two school buses
FREDERICKSBURG – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will replace three drainage pipes under Route 354 (River Road) at Deep Creek in Lancaster County with a concrete box culvert.
Starting Tuesday, March 3, River Road will close to traffic between Route 3 and Route 201 for an estimated six months to safely install the box culvert.
The project will remove the pipes, install the concrete box culvert and replace the roadway on River Road.
The new box culvert is 76 feet long, which is approximately the length of two school buses.
Signs will guide motorists along the recommended four mile detour route, which will be
- Route 618 (Nuttsville Road)
- Route 622 (Morattico Road)
View an online map of the detour route.
Message boards will be posted to alert motorists to the upcoming road closure and detour.
Drivers are encouraged to use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination.
Access to residential driveways along River Road will be maintained at all times.
Weather permitting, work is expected to be complete by Sept. 2026.
