On Saturday, September 5 at 6:00 PM, the concert <DC Jazz Festival: Pureum Jin & The Empress> will be held at Union Stage, located at The Wharf in Washington, D.C.
This performance was organized in collaboration with the "DC Jazz Festival," a premier jazz institution in Washington, D.C. The Korean Cultural Center aims to introduce the musical prowess and originality of outstanding Korean-heritage jazz musicians to local audiences and further expand cultural and artistic exchanges between Korea and the United States.
The centerpiece of the stage, "The Empress," is a jazz band led by New York-based Korean-heritage saxophonist Pureum Jin. Rooted in authentic bebop jazz, the band presents a unique saxophone ensemble marked by sophisticated arrangements, dazzling improvisation, and tight chemistry among its musicians. In 2025, they garnered significant attention within the U.S. jazz scene following the release of their debut album, <Square One>.
For this Washington stage, an all-female four-piece saxophone front line will take center stage, led by Pureum Jin (alto/soprano saxophone) alongside Tessie Overmyer (alto saxophone), Chelsea Baratz (tenor saxophone), and Lisa Parrott (baritone saxophone). They are joined by Allyn Johnson (piano), Amy Shook (bass), and Billy Williams (drums) to round out a highly polished seven-piece ensemble.
During the approximately 60-minute performance, the band will perform jazz standards as well as tracks from their debut album <Square One>. Combining rich, colorful saxophone tones with free improvisation and delicate musical interplay, the performance is set to deliver a deeply moving experience to the audience.
