Organized to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the "Freedom 250 Grand Prix"—the first IndyCar street race in D.C. history—came to a successful close last weekend.
Held over two days starting August 22, the event transformed major thoroughfares around the National Mall, including Pennsylvania, Constitution, and Independence Avenues, into a racing circuit.
The crown of this inaugural street race went to Florida-born American driver Kyle Kirkwood (#27 Sam's Club Andretti Global Honda). Kirkwood claimed the top step of the podium with a dominant performance, leading 128 of the 147 laps.
Throughout the event, tens of thousands of spectators packed the National Mall. Dressed in stars-and-stripes hats, apparel, and official Freedom 250 merchandise emblazoned with bald eagles, fans cheered passionately. The pre-race opening ceremony was a lavish spectacle featuring military band performances and an Air Force fighter jet flyover. Notably, before the green flag signaled the start of the race, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump took a parade lap around the track in the presidential armored limousine, "The Beast," drawing thunderous cheers from the crowd.
The event was organized swiftly in just seven months to meet rigorous security and safety standards, which included welding down more than 200 manhole covers. Passionate motorsport enthusiasts and families from across the nation converged on Washington, D.C., with countless fans bringing autographed helmets and merchandise to the venue.
