Major road closures and parking restrictions will be implemented ahead of the "Freedom 250 Grand Prix," a motorsport event taking place in downtown Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Severe traffic congestion is expected for weekday commuters and weekend drivers as major roads in downtown D.C. will be blocked during the event.
The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia and the National Park Service (NPS) announced on the 20th that they will implement phased vehicular traffic closures and Emergency No Parking restrictions throughout the downtown area for the race taking place on the 22nd and 23rd.
The most extensive road closures will occur between 3:00 a.m. on the 21st and 11:59 p.m. on the 23rd, when the race concludes. During this period, key arterial roads running through downtown D.C.—including Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, and Independence Avenue—as well as roads surrounding major federal government agencies, will be closed to vehicular traffic.
Furthermore, due to the installation and dismantling of event structures, the impact of these restrictions will extend well beyond the event itself. Some road closures and parking restrictions will continue until August 26, while parking bans on major roads near the National Mall will remain in effect until September 3, and in certain sections (parts of 3rd and 7th Streets) up until September 15.
Temporary road closures will also be conducted ahead of the main race to shoot commemorative videos for the branches of the U.S. military. The National Park Service stated that section-by-section closures would be implemented on the morning of the 20th in areas near the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GW Parkway), Anacostia Drive, and Memorial Bridge for U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)-related filming.
Police authorities plan to permit limited access only for residents, employees, and vehicles needing to access buildings, parking facilities, and loading docks within the restricted zones. Drivers arriving at checkpoints must briefly explain the purpose of their visit and their destination to on-site officers to receive guidance on entry.
A D.C. police official urged, "Please use public transportation as much as possible during the event, and drivers should be sure to check detour routes and accessible parking garage entrances in advance." Detailed information, including closure maps and prohibited items for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, can be found on the event's official website and in Metropolitan Police Department notices.
