Severe Cold and Surprise Snowfalls Forecast for the South

Forecasts indicate that Virginia is set to be hit by one of the strongest "Super El Niño" events in history this winter, bringing significant snowfall alongside severe cold snaps.

The National Weather Service (NWS), under the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), announced on the 19th (local time) that there is a 90% chance of a strong El Niño developing during the 2026–27 fall and winter seasons. In particular, the probability of this El Niño becoming the strongest recorded since meteorological observations began in 1950 stands at 69%, urging residents to take special precautions.

El Niño is a climate phenomenon where sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific rise abnormally above average, significantly altering winter weather patterns across the North American continent. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) explained, "With the southern jet stream strengthening due to a powerful El Niño, there is a very high probability of above-normal precipitation across the Gulf Coast and the Southeastern U.S. this winter."

According to forecasts from private weather services such as OpenSnow, regional weather volatility within Virginia is expected to peak this winter. Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area are projected to see volatile and complex weather with alternating snow, rain, sleet, and ice. In contrast, the southern region is forecast to experience bitter cold coupled with sudden snowfalls.

Experts believe the entire Northeastern U.S., including Washington, D.C., will face the most challenging weather conditions. While coastal areas will frequently see mixed precipitation like sleet or rain, inland and mountainous areas face a very high likelihood of multiple major snowstorms between this coming January and February.

Meanwhile, along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, hurricane development is analyzed to be somewhat suppressed due to increased upper-level wind shear caused by El Niño. However, regional climate polarization is expected to intensify across the U.S., with precipitation increasing significantly in the Southwest and Rocky Mountains, while the Pacific Northwest becomes warmer and drier than usual.
