WalletHub Study: Large Wage Gap, Low Percentage of Female Executives and Politicians
Gender Inequality Evident in Workplace Environment, Education, and Healthcare
A recent study shows that Virginia ranks among the lowest states in the nation for women's equality.
According to the "Best & Worst States for Women's Equality in 2026" report released by the personal finance website WalletHub, Virginia ranked 43rd out of all 50 states, earning the dishonorable distinction of being the 8th most unequal state for women.
WalletHub compared and analyzed 17 key metrics across the 50 states to measure the fairness of treatment women receive in the U.S. Key indicators included income and unemployment disparities between men and women, the share of female lawmakers and corporate executives, and the proportion of women with advanced degrees such as master's and doctorates.
The study was conducted using the latest data from government agencies, major non-profit research organizations, and academic institutions.
The analysis revealed that Virginia scored low in multiple areas, including workplace environments, economic opportunities, educational attainment, healthcare, and political representation. In particular, the state ranked near the bottom in metrics assessing women's advancement to leadership roles, such as the share of female executives, gaps in advanced degree holders, and wage discrimination, highlighting severe gender disparities.
A WalletHub analyst emphasized the need for corrective action at the state level, stating, "Achieving women's equality goes beyond simply granting legal rights; it requires creating an environment where women receive substantially equal treatment across financial and economic opportunities, education, and politics."
