Anxiety among drivers across the United States has reached a peak as unexplained fires continue to break out in parked vehicles inside garages and parking lots while their engines are turned off, rather than while driving. With modern vehicles densely packed with advanced electronic devices and high-voltage batteries, the risk of so-called "key-off" fires—caused by short circuits or heat buildup even when the power is shut off—has surged.

As a result, authorities and automakers are issuing a barrage of emergency "Park Outside" recall advisories warning drivers to park outdoors away from buildings and structures due to fire hazards. However, faced with these warnings without viable alternatives, vehicle owners are complaining of severe parking shortages and inconvenience.

According to the latest data from vehicle history specialist Carfax, approximately 3.2 million unrepaired vehicles subject to "Park Outside" recalls due to fire risks are currently being driven on roads across the United States.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also highlight the severity of the situation. According to NHTSA, 17 "Park Outside" recall orders were issued between January and July this year alone, covering nearly 1.7 million vehicles. This marks the steepest increase since NHTSA established the "Park Outside" risk designation in 2015 to prevent property damage and casualties. Notably, during this summer alone, authorities issued eight consecutive emergency park-outside warnings, including a recall of 1 million Jeep vehicles for a power steering pump electrical wiring defect.

Actual incidents of damage are mounting. Sarah Lamerssen, a California resident, received a park-outside recall notice late last year due to the risk of high-voltage battery fires in her 2022 Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid (PHEV). However, before she could even schedule a recall appointment, the vehicle caught fire while her daughter was driving, leaving the car completely destroyed and unrecognizable. In Fargo, North Dakota, a man stepped into his garage and fled in shock after witnessing flames erupting from his parked Hyundai Santa Fe.

Experts point to the increasing technological sophistication and electrification of automobiles as the root cause of these bizarre fires. Modern vehicles are densely packed with countless electronic components and complex electrical circuits, such as autonomous driving assistance systems, heated seat motors, starter relays, power steering pumps, and high-voltage batteries.

“Even if the engine is turned off, high amounts of electricity flow through the circuits 24/7, creating a structure that constantly generates heat,” explained Frank Borris, a safety consultant and former NHTSA investigator. “The exponential increase in electronic devices inside vehicles means that the likelihood of a fire caused by a malfunction or short circuit has increased just as much.”

Sean Kane, president of Safety Research and Strategies, a vehicle safety research organization, also analyzed: “Recent vehicles are designed with very tight engine bays packed with components. As a result, residual heat is retained far longer than in the past even after turning off the engine, creating an environment ripe for fires.”

The problem is that vehicle owners who receive recall notices are at their wits' end with no realistic alternatives. While typical recalls involving brake or airbag defects only require caution while driving, park-outside recalls carry the risk of a stationary vehicle catching fire and spreading to entire homes, garages, and neighboring buildings.

However, it takes several months to over a year for automakers to analyze the root cause of a recall, procure improved parts, and provide actual repairs. In the meantime, owners must continue indefinite outdoor parking while living with a ticking time bomb.

The hardship is especially severe for urban residents who live in multi-family housing like apartments or condos—where they must rely on indoor underground garages—or where outdoor parking is scarce. Steve Homil, an owner of a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, vented his frustration, calling it “an insane, massive inconvenience and a complete mess.”

Some vehicles suffer from the dual burden of fire hazards and theft risks. Owners of certain Hyundai and Kia models that became theft targets due to the absence of anti-theft immobilizers are in extreme distress as park-outside recalls overlap. Sean Kane noted, “We are receiving desperate inquiries from owners saying, ‘I don’t want my house burning down, but I also don’t want to leave my car outside and have it stolen. What on earth am I supposed to do?’”

Michael Brooks, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, urged automakers to quickly develop technical solutions and secure replacement parts, stating, “A fire breaking out in an unattended, parked vehicle poses a fatal hazard that can lead to a major disaster.”
