Stage Site of the 250th Independence Day Celebration Left Devastated
Despite Police and Prosecutors Concluding Damage Was Caused by Stage Construction and Substandard Workmanship
Trump Claims on Social Media That Destruction Was Linked to the WWII Memorial and Reflecting Pool
Rebutting Findings of Internal Investigations, Trump Goes as Far as Attacking the U.S. Attorney
President Donald Trump has sparked controversy once again by claiming that "vandals" were responsible for the damaged grass at the site of a massive Independence Day celebration held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., last month. This claim directly contradicts authorities' assessments that the damage naturally resulted from the installation of heavy structures and the gathering of massive crowds, further intensifying tensions with political opponents and internal law enforcement agencies.
On August 16, President Trump shared a photo on his social media platform, Truth Social, showing the lawn situated between the World War II Memorial and the Reflecting Pool near the Washington Monument. In the photo, the once-lush green lawn appeared devastated—withered, dried out, turned brown, and torn up in several spots.
In the post, President Trump harshly criticized the situation, writing, "Look at what the Vandals did to the grass between the damaged World War II Memorial and the soon to be reopened Reflecting Pool. Anyone who thinks the Reflecting Pool wasn't vandalized should go back to Law School!"
However, media reports and on-the-ground evidence present a starkly different picture from the President's claims. The lawn in question was the primary site for the main stage of the "Salute to America" event held on July 4 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. Live webcam footage from the top of the Washington Monument and photographs taken by major news outlets at the time show that a massive stage for large bands and bleachers capable of holding tens of thousands of spectators completely covered the entire lawn. Photos taken during the teardown process immediately following the event also confirm that the ground directly underneath the removed structures had already turned brown. In other words, experts unanimously conclude that the grass died due to standard wear and tear from heavy equipment and crowds—compounded by the pressure of heavy structures, the trampling of hundreds of thousands of people, and heavy rainfall.
Nevertheless, observers suggest that President Trump's insistence on blaming "vandals" stems from deep-seated distrust within his administration toward investigative agencies. Whenever delays or damage have occurred during various memorial renovation projects in Washington, D.C., Trump has repeatedly alleged behind-the-scenes sabotage without providing clear evidence.
Notably, earlier this month, he clashed head-on with an investigative team led by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, an ally of his. After investigating the cause of the damage around the Reflecting Pool, federal prosecutors concluded that it was the result of substandard initial construction and inadequate project management, rather than criminal vandalism. In response, Trump publicly criticized U.S. Attorney Pirro and posted additional photos showing what appeared to be carved-out numbers on the lawn representing anti-Trump sabotage, firmly pushing back: "While there may have been some construction issues, the primary cause was the work of vandals who targeted the grass as well."
Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities arrested Melissa L. Faris, 47, of Kentucky, last week and charged her with felony offenses for spray-painting graffiti on the World War II Memorial structure and pouring detergent into the fountain. However, the indictment and arrest warrant submitted by prosecutors contain no charges or statements linking her to the extensive lawn damage mentioned by President Trump.
With the President continuing to push conspiracy-tinged vandalism theories while ignoring objective evidence regarding the lawn damage at a symbolic landmark in the nation's capital, the controversy across the political sphere and public opinion is expected to persist for some time.
