경찰, 운전자 현장 대기… 과속 여부 등 경위 조사 중

북버지니아에서 한창 인기인 전기 스쿠터(e-scooter)를 타던 9세 소년이 미니밴 차량에 치여 숨지는 비극적 사고가 발생했다.

페어팩스 카운티 경찰국(FCPD)에 따르면, 사고는 지난 23일(목) 오후 5시 30분경 헌든(Herndon) 지역의 한 주택가 도로에서 발생했다.

사고 당시 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰과 구급대는 현장에서 머리 등을 다친 9세 소년을 인근 병원으로 긴급 이송했으나 끝내 숨졌다. 경찰은 유가족 보호 등을 위해 사망한 소년의 신원을 공개하지 않았다.

현장 브리핑에 나선 크리스 코스그리프 경찰 국장은 “이번 사고는 해당 지역 주민들은 물론 관련된 모든 이들에게 매우 안타깝고 비극적인 사건”이라며 애도를 표했다.

경찰 조사 결과, 사고 당시 소년은 보호 장구인 안전 헬멧을 착용하지 않은 상태였던 것으로 확인됐다. 사고를 낸 미니밴 운전자인 성인 여성은 충돌 직후 현장에 남아 경찰 조사에 협조했다. 당국은 현재 운전자의 과속 여부 및 사고 당시 전기 스쿠터가 전력으로 작동 중이었는지, 아니면 수동으로 주행 중이었는지 등 정확한 사고 경위를 집중 조사하고 있다.

코스그리프 국장은 “자녀들이 야외에서 놀 때 반드시 안전 헬멧을 착용하도록 지도해 달라”며 “기본적인 교통 안전 수칙 교육과 함께 부모들의 각별한 주의와 관찰이 필요하다”고 간곡히 당부했다.

한편, 최근 전국적으로 전기 스쿠터 및 e-바이크 아동 이용자가 급증함에 따라 관련 인명 사고가 이어지고 있어, 지역 학부모들의 각별한 주의가 요구된다.

9-Year-Old Boy Killed in Northern Virginia E-Scooter Crash

A 9-year-old boy was struck and killed by a minivan while riding an electric scooter in Fairfax County on Thursday afternoon, according to local authorities.

Fairfax County Police responded to the crash around 5:30 p.m. in the Herndon area of Northern Virginia.

Emergency crews transported the child to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not publicly identified the boy out of respect for the family.

“This is a very tragic incident for everyone in this neighborhood and for everyone involved,” said Fairfax County Police Capt. Chris Cosgriff during a news briefing Thursday evening.

According to police, the boy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The driver of the minivan, an adult woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.

Detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether speed was a factor and whether the scooter was being powered or operated manually when the collision occurred.

In the wake of the tragedy, local police urged parents to review basic safety practices with their children.

“Please have your kids wear helmets,” Capt. Cosgriff said. “Teach them the basic safety rules. Keep an eye on them.”
