Trash and Recycling Drop-Off Hours and Events Effective Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the Montgomery County Transfer Station will begin restrictions on the acceptance of commercial mattresses and box springs. Mattresses arriving in commercial loads (Stake Bodies, Open Tops, etc.) will not be accepted unless they are accompanied by a residential manifest verifying same-day collection within Montgomery County, and loads without a manifest will be rejected. Additionally, all other Commercial mattresses will be turned away and not permitted for disposal on the tipping floor at any time. Shady Grove Processing and Transfer Station Drop-Off Locations and Waste Requirements Residential waste drop-off requirements:

  • No out-of-county waste is allowed.
  • All Residents must provide proof of residency.
  • All loads over 500 lbs. must be weighed at the scales and pay the required fee.
  • No Loads over 500 lbs. Commercial waste or commercial or rental vehicles will not be accepted on Sunday. Drop-off Locations Use the residential entrance and drive forward, past the Recycling Center on the right.
  • To the left, you'll find the drop-off for Municipal Waste that may be discarded at the Public Unloading Facility (PUF). Continue counter-clockwise past the PUF to drop off recyclables and other non-trash materials. To the right, you'll find drop-offs for:
  • Electronics, books, textiles, and building materials
  • Tires and bicycles
  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) To the left, you'll find drop-offs for:
  • Scrap metal
  • Oil
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and plastic film
  • Mattresses Continue past the Scale House to the:
  • Yard Waste drop-off This is the last residential material drop-off location. Continue past the Main Tipping Floor and Annex until you return to the Residential entrance. Requirements
  • No out-of-County waste is allowed or accepted.
  • Do not bring waste generated from outside of the County. The Montgomery County Transfer Station and Material Recovery Facility does not accept waste or other material that is generated from outside of Montgomery County and will be turned away.
  • Commercial/Business Loads must be generated within the County.
  • All contractors must provide verification of job location or county of origin.
  • If you are not able to verify that the material has originated from within the County, you will not be permitted to dump.
  • No Commercial vehicles on Sundays. Sunday is for residents only, no businesses. Drop-off Locations Use the Commercial and Truck entrance to the Scale House. Turn right and then left to get to the Main Tipping Floor and Annex. Follow the staff's instructions to unload materials. Residential Drop-off Hours by Weight of Materials Residential Entrance The Residential entrance located at 16101 Frederick Road (355), will be closed on Sundays, Holidays, and other times when the Scale House is closed to commercial traffic. This ensures the efficient flow of traffic on Frederick Road (355), to prevent dangerous traffic backup, and reduce extended wait times at the Public Unloading Facility (PUF). Commercial and Truck Entrance All persons and vehicles using the Transfer Station during these times should enter through the Commercial and Truck entrance located at 16055 Shady Grove Road between Frederick Road (355) and CarMax. Use the Residential entrance.
  • Monday - Saturday: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Use the Commercial and Truck entrance.
  • Sunday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. If your vehicle's trash load does not appear to be clearly under 500 pounds:
  • We may ask you to have your load weighed at the scales (Monday - Saturday: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.) at our discretion.
  • If you are at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station on a Sunday when the scales are closed, we will ask you to return on Monday. All loads are subject to inspection. Acceptable Materials and Services Residential and Commercial

Residential We do not accept car parts for disposal or recycling at the Shady Grove Transfer Station. You may contact a local mechanic shop or a scrap metal business to dispose of car parts. Transporting Materials You may bring material to the Transfer Station in a trailer.

  • If you use the Residential entrance, your trailer may be up to 5 feet x 9 feet, with maximum 24-inch sideboards.
  • You must use the Commercial and Truck entrance for trailers larger than this. No trailers are allowed at the Public Unloading Facility (PUF).
  • You must bring your materials to the Transfer Station by car, truck, van, or similar vehicle.
  • Walking or riding bicycles, motorcycles, or electric scooters are prohibited at the Transfer Station. Poolesville Beauty Spot Hours: Saturday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Location: 19200 Jerusalem Road, Poolesville, MD 20837 The Poolesville Beauty Spot is open for Montgomery County residents wishing to discard bulk trash (up to 499 pounds).
