28일 오전 헤리티지 쇼핑센터 인근 주택가서 발생
흉기 위협 후 도주하던 남성, 경찰 권총 탈취 시도하다 찰과상 총상 입고 체포
워싱턴 지역 최대 한인 상권 중 하나인 버지니아주 애난데일의 주택가 한복판에서 경찰이 피의자를 향해 총기를 발사하고 체포하는 사건이 발생해 주민들을 불안에 떨게 했다. 가정폭력 신고로 시작된 이번 대치 상황은 피의자가 경찰관의 무기를 강제로 탈취하려 시도하면서 일촉즉발의 총격전으로 이어졌다.
페어팩스 카운티 경찰국(Fairfax County Police Department) 발표에 따르면, 사건은 28일 오전 9시경 한인 업소와 식당이 밀집한 헤리티지 쇼핑센터 바로 뒤편 서터 레이나(Sutter Lane) 7000번지 일대 주택에서 시작됐다. 당시 911에는 "남편이 날붙이 두 개를 손에 쥔 채 자해를 시도하고 있으며, 나까지 위협하고 있다"는 아내의 긴급 구조 요청이 접수됐다.
신고를 받고 현장에 출동한 경찰은 집 밖으로 급히 도주하는 남성 피의자를 목격했다. 경찰은 즉시 K-9 수색팀을 투입해 포위망을 좁혀갔으며, 인근 풀숲을 약 15분간 수색한 끝에 수풀 뒤에 숨어 있던 피의자를 발견했다.
그러나 피의자는 순순히 응하지 않고 갑자기 경찰관을 향해 몸을 던졌다. 그는 현장에 있던 경찰관의 허리춤에 차여 있던 권총을 양손으로 강력하게 움켜쥐며 강탈을 시도했다. 육탄전이 벌어지는 긴박한 순간 속에서 당황한 경찰관은 권총 3발을 발사했고, 이 중 1발이 피의자의 오른쪽 어깨 부위를 스쳤다. 현장에 동행했던 다른 경찰관 역시 비살상 무기인 테이저건을 즉시 발사해 피의자를 현장에서 완전 제압했다.
총상을 입은 피의자는 즉시 인근 병원으로 이송돼 치료를 받았으며, 생명에는 지장이 없는 상태다. 조사 결과 피의자는 도주 과정에서 갖고 있던 날붙이들을 버린 것으로 확인됐다. 경찰은 주변 지역에 설치된 방범 카메라(CCTV) 영상을 통해 피의자가 무기를 유기하는 장면을 확보하고 관련 증거물을 전량 회수했다.
케빈 데이비스 페어팩스 카운티 경찰국장은 현장 브리핑을 통해 "피의자는 이미 과거에도 가정폭력 전과가 있던 인물"이라며 "경찰관에 대한 중상해 시도 및 중범죄급 총기 강탈 혐의 등을 적용해 구속 수사할 방침"이라고 밝혔다. 경찰 당국은 피습 피해 여성에 대한 보호 및 지원 조치를 진행하는 한편, 현장 상황이 담긴 경찰관들의 바디캠 영상을 30일 이내에 일반에 공개할 예정이다.
사건이 발생한 서터 레이나 일대는 한인들의 방문이 잦은 상가와 인접해 있어 평소에도 통행량이 많은 곳이다. 대형 인명 피해로 이어지지는 않았으나, 한낮에 인근 주택가에서 흉기 위협과 총격까지 벌어졌다는 소식에 지역 한인 주민들과 상인들은 놀란 가슴을 쓸어내려야 했다.
Man Shot, Arrested After Trying to Grab Officer’s Gun in Annandale Neighborhood
A domestic violence call culminated in a police shooting in the heart of Annandale's Korean business district on Thursday morning, leaving local residents and business owners shaken after a suspect attempted to grab an officer's handgun.
According to the FCPD (FCPD), the incident began around 9:00 a.m. in the 7000 block of Sutter Lane, directly behind the Heritage Shopping Center—an area heavily populated by Korean-owned businesses and restaurants.
Dispatchers received an emergency 911 call from a woman reporting that her husband was self-harming with two bladed weapons and threatening her life. Upon arrival, officers spotted the suspect fleeing into a nearby wooded area.
A K-9 unit was immediately deployed to set up a perimeter. After a 15-minute search, officers located the suspect hiding behind dense brush.
As officers approached, the suspect suddenly lunged forward and aggressively grabbed the duty weapon holstered at an officer's waist with both hands. During the ensuing struggle, the officer discharged three rounds, one of which grazed the suspect's upper right shoulder. A second officer concurrently deployed a Taser, subduing the suspect at the scene.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators later confirmed that the suspect had discarded his weapons while fleeing; footage from a local security camera captured him throwing the blades into the brush, allowing police to recover all physical evidence.
At a press briefing, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis noted that the suspect has a prior history of domestic violence. Chief Davis stated that the suspect will face felony charges, including attempted aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and attempted disarming of a police officer.
The police department is providing victim support services to the suspect's wife and plans to release body-worn camera footage of the incident within 30 days.
While no bystanders were injured, the daytime shooting in a bustling residential area adjacent to the Korean commercial hub has left community members alarmed over neighborhood safety.
