The NFL's Washington Commanders announced on the 11th that they have selected a consortium of Clark Construction Group, Mortenson Co., and Smoot Construction Co. to build a $3.8 billion state-of-the-art domed stadium on the RFK Stadium site.
Spanning approximately 1.8 million square feet with a seating capacity of 70,000, the domed stadium aims to open in 2030. Following the start of site clearing and grading work last June, main construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027.
McLean, Maryland-based Clark and Washington, D.C.-based Smoot are specialized firms that previously led the construction of major local sports venues, including Nationals Park and Capital One Arena. Minnesota-based Mortenson also boasts an extensive track record in building NFL domed stadiums, including Allegiant Stadium for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Matt Haas, head of construction for the Commanders, expressed high expectations, calling it "the optimal team with sports venue construction experience and a deep understanding of the Washington community."
The city of Washington, D.C. and the Commanders plan to revitalize the local economy by gradually carrying out a mixed-use development project across the entire 174-acre RFK Campus site, starting with the construction of the domed stadium.
