The Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office in Virginia announced on the 11th that a man charged with sexually assaulting a woman on a Herndon trail in late 2024 has been convicted.
According to prosecutors, the defendant, Denis Humberto Roman Navarrete, 33, attacked and forcibly sexually assaulted a woman who was walking home on the 'W&OD Trail' in Herndon on the night of November 18, 2024. Investigations revealed that the victim was attacked while walking home after leaving a nearby restaurant.
Through a plea bargain, Roman Navarrete faces a final sentencing hearing on December 11 and could be sentenced to up to 18 years in prison.
Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano emphasized, "The defendant posed a serious threat to the community by sexually assaulting an innocent stranger in a public place," adding, "He must be isolated from society for the sake of public safety."
At the time of the incident, former Herndon Police Chief Maggie DeBoard highlighted the severity of the case, noting, "In my more than 12 years in office, this is the only stranger rape case that has occurred in this area."
Meanwhile, the suspect, who was arrested near the scene shortly after the crime, confessed to the offense. However, the verdict was delayed for about two years as he underwent competency evaluations and treatment procedures to determine whether he was mentally fit to stand trial.
