Route 29 and 653 turn lanes

Route 29 and Route 653 turning lanes project, Nelson County

City/county: Nelson (county)

Overview

The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety on Route 29, a Corridor of Statewide Significance. The improvements were identified in a transportation scenario planning report in support of large public events and festivals.

This project consists of turn lane improvements to the intersection of Route 29 northbound and Route 653 in Nelson County. The improvements include extending the existing Route 29 north bound right turn lane, widen, and modify the curve radius on Route 653, and converting Route 653 from a two-lane undivided to a three-lane undivided facility to allow free flow right turns from Route 29 north.

A detour is being evaluated and, if implemented, will expedite the construction schedule which reduces the duration of impacts to the travelling public traversing a work zone and provides a safer working environment. Access to all properties will be maintained during construction.
