Overview
A project to improve safety at the intersection of Route 19/460 and Route 610 in Tazewell County is under construction. The project includes raising the elevation of Route 19/460 toward Tazewell to remove the grade difference between the east and westbound lanes. Route 610 traffic will then be tied into the traffic signals currently at the intersection for east and westbound turns, as well as the ability to travel straight across Route 19/460. Additionally, a new traffic signal pole will be installed and the acceleration lane for those turning right from Route 610 on to eastbound Route 19/460 will be removed.
The project is financed using funds through VDOT's SMART SCALE Program, which includes an application and scoring process to evaluate projects statewide based on key factors such as improving safety and contributing to economic development.
Route 19/460 carries approximately 12,300 vehicles per day in this area.
