라이프가드 자리 비운 사이 30여 명 입수
나이키 축구 캠프 참가 아동… 경찰 및 대학 측 경위 조사 중
워싱턴DC 소재 DC대학교(UDC) 내 수영장에서 6세 남아가 물에 빠져 의식을 잃는 중태에 빠졌다. 사고 당시 현장에는 안전요원(라이프가드)이 자리를 비운 상태였던 것으로 파악돼 대학 및 캠프 측의 안전 관리 소홀 논란이 일고 있다.
대학 경찰 보고서에 따르면 사건은 지난 20일 오후 1시경 UDC 내 'E.B. 헨더슨 스포츠 복합단지' 수영장에서 발생했다. 신고를 받고 대학 경찰이 현장에 도착했을 당시 이미 DC 경찰과 소방구급대(EMS)가 응급처치를 진행 중이었다. 아동은 현장에서 안정화 조치를 받은 뒤 오후 1시 21분경 어린이 국립병원(Children’s National Hospital)으로 긴급 이송됐다.
피해 아동 측 변호인 도미니크 칼훈(Dominique Calhoun)은 수요일 언론 인터뷰를 통해 "아이가 여전히 인공호흡기를 착용하고 있는 중태"라며 "부모는 매일 병원을 찾아 관을 끼고 누워있는 어린 자식을 지켜보며 깊은 슬픔에 빠져 있다"고 전했다.
경찰 조사 결과, 사고 당시 수영장 안전관리를 담당하던 라이프가드 매니저는 점심 식사를 위해 자리를 비운 상태였다. 매니저는 사고 직전에야 현장에 복귀했다고 진술했으며, 안전요원이 없는 상황에서 약 30명의 어린이가 수영장에 있었던 것으로 추정된다.
사고를 당한 아동은 당일 수영장 인근 운동장에서 진행된 포사커(FourSoccer) 주관 '나이키 축구 여름 캠프'에 참가 중이었다.
칼훈 변호사는 "철저한 감독을 약속했던 캠프에서 어떻게 지도자도 없이 30명의 아이들이 수영장에 방치될 수 있었는지 의문"이라며 "정확한 사실관계를 파악 중"이라고 밝혔다.
사고 당시 상황에 대해 한 캠프 카운슬러는 물속에 잠긴 아이를 발견하고 들어갔으나 "아이가 너무 무거워 구출하지 못했다"고 진술했다. 이후 포사커 감독이자 헤드코치인 벤자민 모티머(Benjamin Mortimer)가 수영장에 뛰어들어 아이를 건져낸 후 구급대가 도착할 때까지 심폐소생술(CPR)을 실시한 것으로 확인됐다.
UDC 측은 공식 입장을 통해 "현재 이번 사건의 정확한 경위를 조사 중"이라며 "조사가 진행되는 동안 개인정보 보호 및 유가족에 대한 배려 차원에서 상세한 언급은 어렵다"고 밝혔다. UDC는 조사가 완료될 때까지 체육복합단지 내 수영장 운영을 전면 중단하기로 결정했다.
6-Year-Old Hospitalized After Near-Drowning at UDC Pool; Safety Negligence Alleged
A 6-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being found unresponsive at the bottom of a pool at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) on Monday, during a time when no lifeguard was on duty.
According to a UDC police report, emergency responders were called to the pool at the E.B. Henderson Sports Complex shortly after 1:00 p.m. D.C. Police and D.C. Fire and EMS personnel were already performing CPR when campus officers arrived at the scene. The child was stabilized and transported to Children’s National Hospital at approximately 1:21 p.m.
Dominique Calhoun, the attorney representing the child's family, stated on Wednesday that the boy remains intubated in the intensive care unit.
"Unfortunately, his parents are going to the hospital every day and seeing their 6-year-old baby in a hospital bed with tubes in him," Calhoun said. "What happened at this camp? How did 30 kids end up in a pool unsupervised when that camp promised supervision for everyone? We don’t know the story yet, and we’re still trying to figure out all the facts."
The child was attending a Nike Soccer Summer Camp, organized by FourSoccer, which was being held on an adjacent field near the athletic facility.
Investigations revealed that the UDC lifeguard manager had left the facility for lunch and returned just as the emergency unfolded. He estimated that roughly 30 children were in the water at the time without a designated lifeguard present.
According to the police report, a camp counselor attempted to rescue the boy after noticing him submerged but was unable to pull him out, telling investigators the child was "too heavy." Head coach and FourSoccer director Benjamin Mortimer then dived into the pool, extracted the child, and administered CPR until paramedics arrived.
In an official statement, UDC expressed sympathy while confirming an ongoing inquiry into the incident.
"UDC is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident," the university stated. "While that review is underway, we cannot comment on personnel matters or discuss the camper’s condition out of respect for the family’s privacy. The pool at UDC’s athletic complex is closed pending completion of the university’s review."
