Daily Multivitamins Help Older Adults Maintain Daily Mobility and Functional Health
Three-Year Clinical Trial of 16,000+ Seniors Shows Measurable Improvements in Physical Well-being
[WASHINGTON] Taking a daily multivitamin may help seniors preserve their functional health and maintain independence in daily activities, according to a recent large-scale clinical study.
Dr. Bayu B. Bekele and his research team at the Georgia Prevention Institute presented their findings at NUTRITION 2026, the annual flagship meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. The three-year study observed more than 16,000 adults aged 60 and older.
Using data from the Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), researchers evaluated 16,027 participants assigned randomly to receive daily multivitamins, cocoa extract, both, or a placebo over three years.
Functional health was assessed using the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ), measuring participants' ability to perform tasks such as dressing, bathing, walking, climbing stairs, and doing housework, as well as symptom burdens like fatigue and shortness of breath.
Results indicated that participants taking daily multivitamins experienced statistically significant reductions in symptom burden—such as shortness of breath and fatigue—and achieved higher overall functional health scores compared to the placebo group.
"As people age, fatigue and reduced physical capacity often make routine tasks difficult, even without diagnosed diseases," noted Dr. Bekele. "Our findings suggest multivitamins can serve as a supportive tool alongside healthy lifestyle habits to help maintain endurance and daily function."
While acknowledging that the magnitude of improvement was modest, researchers noted this is the first major randomized trial examining multivitamins' impact on seniors' daily physical functionality.
