FCPS Introduces New Emergency Management System to Strengthen School Safety As part of the ongoing commitment to strengthening layered safety and security programs, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is implementing a new emergency management system, created by Raptor, in all school buildings. The new emergency management system is designed to support faster, more coordinated responses during emergencies by improving communication between schools, FCPS security staff, and local first responders and law enforcement. The system includes sensors installed throughout FCPS schools and a wearable Emergency Response Button (ERB) for staff, which they can use to quickly and discreetly request help. When activated on FCPS property, the ERB alerts FCPS’ Security Operations Center, local emergency services, and staff at the affected school. The sensors help pinpoint where within a building assistance is needed, speeding up how quickly school staff and emergency services respond to an incident. However, the ERB does not replace calling 911. It is meant to serve as an additional safety tool that staff can use if a phone is not immediately available or if calling may not be safe or practical. FCPS remains committed to maintaining safe, supportive learning environments for all students and staff. The implementation of the ERB reflects the division’s continued focus on preparedness, coordination, and the well-being of the entire school community.
