Girl Scouts National Convention Returns to Washington D.C. After Half a Century, Promising a $12M Economic Boost
As the United States celebrates its Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) this year, Washington D.C. is gearing up for a major economic boost as thousands of Girl Scouts from across the nation converge on the capital.
According to Destination D.C., the city's tourism authority, the 58th Girl Scouts National Council Session will take place from July 20 to 25. This massive triennial event is returning to Washington D.C. for the first time in 51 years, with the last D.C. convention held back in 1975.
Approximately 10,000 attendees—including current scouts, alumnae, and supporters—are expected to flock to the city. Destination D.C. estimates that the convention will generate roughly $11.9 million in direct visitor spending and fill at least 16,417 hotel room nights. The actual economic impact is projected to be even higher when accounting for participants staying with friends and family in the area.
While recent large-scale events in Washington D.C. have occasionally suffered from shifting political tides and polarization, this Girl Scouts convention is highly anticipated as a pure venue for unity. For instance, some of last year's major events, such as the international LGBTQ+ festival 'WorldPride', fell short of attendance expectations after becoming entangled in political controversies.
In an interview with the Washington Business Journal, Kim Ford, CEO of the Girl Scouts Nation's Capital, expressed strong confidence in the event's success. "Girl Scouts is one of the top global iconic brands that transcends political ideologies and generations," Ford said. "Because we always deliver positive values regardless of changing political climates or external tensions, we are confident this convention will be highly successful."
The convention will be centered around the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. From July 20 to 22, the main council sessions will take place to elect leadership for the next three years and debate key organizational agendas. Concurrently, a week-long "Girl Scout Festival" open to both scouts and the general public will be held at Franklin Park, featuring zip lines, rock-climbing walls, and live performances.
Washington D.C. holds a deeply significant place in Girl Scouts history. The organization's very first national convention was held here in 1915. Furthermore, during the city's last hosting turn in 1975, the organization reached a historic milestone by electing Gloria Scott as its first Black national president.
The Girl Scouts convention kicks off a bustling July for Washington D.C., which will also play host to the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference and the Asian pop culture festival, Otakon. Together, these three major events are projected to inject over $38 million into the local economy and generate more than 56,000 hotel room nights.
